Struggling to Survive

The Lincolns’ Difficult First Year in Illinois was released August 2, 2025, by Decatur’s own Words Matter Publishing. The book, written by author Carolyn Harmon, presents a compelling narrative of the Lincolns’ challenges when they first moved to Illinois, focusing on the hardships—health crises, financial strain, family dynamics, and frontier adversity—that shaped young Abraham Lincoln’s character.

Attendees can purchase first editions at the museum that afternoon. This is an excellent opportunity to meet the author, obtain a signed copy and engage in conversation about Abraham Lincoln’s formative trials.
